Lemon Balm -things I learn from my kids

Lemon balm is a plant. It is green and mostly just a bushy leaf thing that spreads everywhere. We had them in the yard growing up, I never really thought much about those plants (roses are prettier) ,until one day my mom showed me something awesome;  if you take a lemon balm leaf in your hand and brush it ,it smells amazing. Also bugs don’t really go for them so that’s great too. These ordinary looking plants smelled extraordinary. I recently found out that the essential oil “Melissa” which is very expensive and highly regarded for all sorts of wonderful properties is from this plant. Cool huh?
Sometimes things that look quite ordinary have hidden qualities that are more amazing then we could imagine just from looking.

Watering the plants with my kids might sound ordinary but each day it is like I am getting a lesson in life. Kids see so many things as more then they appear to be. My dandelions that no weed killer seems to ward off are little magic balls of wonder; the wind chimes are a symphony and the playground a castle. What a lesson to me. The simple things are so much more then I give them credit for and then so many other things that I give credit too don’t matter at all, for example as long as the couch is comfortable my kids don’t care if it’s from a thrift store or Pottery Barn.

Kids are just the greatest.

  1. I once had the most wonderful cookies that had an actual lemon balm leaf on each one. Sadly though I discovered that lemon balm is bad for people with hypothyroid issues so I can't have any. See, now you've learned something else new.
I agree though, kids are the greatest and when it comes to seeing things through their eyes it makes the world magical all over again.
